Though curiously nowadays a “war for energy” is sometimes propagandized as a “war for democracy”.

In affluent countries tap water is of excellent quality and very cheap. Nevertheless quite often people prefer to drink mineral water or soft drinks which are as much as 1000 times more expensive. This is a classical example of the luxurious energy attitude of affluent societies: a lot of energy is consumed to supply drinkable water to households which is mostly used to flush the toilet or sprinkle the garden. On the other hand big energy investments are made to bring a variety of drinks sometimes abused and unhealthy on our tables.

Note that a substantially smaller area 150 000 km2 covered with 10 %‐efficient photovoltaic panels would in principle cover the current worldtotalenergy demand.
