Abstract
AbstractWe present a dynamic model for the oscillatory reduction of anions such as S2O82− on different electrodes. The model is solely based on well known electrochemical formulae so that the mechanism can be well understood. The central mechanistic feature is a region of negative differential resistance in the cathodic current/overvoltage curve. It is caused by the repulsive electrostatic interaction between the anions and the negative electrode surface, which counteracts the effect of increasing overvoltage. The model is investigated with numerical techniques from the theory of nonlinear dynamics. The calculations turn out to be in good agreement with experiment.
