Aninoides : a new rangeomorph genus from the upper Ediacaran of Newfoundland
Aninoides coombsorum
, a new genus and species of the clade Rangeomorpha, is described and figured from two specimens of differing life stages preserved in siltstone of the upper Ediacaran E. M. Coombs Surface (Fermeuse Formation, Newfoundland, Canada).
Aninoides coombsorum
is readily attributed to the family Charniidae, having branches closely resembling those of the iconic
Charnia masoni
, including sub‐parallel second‐order branches, but differing in its long, straight and proximodistally oriented first‐order branches. This work considers the morphogenesis of
A. coombsorum
, how it informs us as to how the Charniidae grew, and the characters that enable the recognition of rangeomorph taxa by use of a dichotomous key.
