Abstract
Using a combination of Arabidopsis mutants for enhanced H2O2 availability (cat2), partial glutathione deficiency (cad2) and loss of NPR1 function (npr1), the roles of glutathione in determining jasmonic acid (JA) gene expression were studied. Genetically or pharmacologically induced glutathione deficiency decreased basal expression of two jasmonic acid (JA) marker genes, and microarray analysis of the cad2 mutant indicated that this was part of a general effect on JA‐associated gene expression. Comparison of cat2 cad2 and cat2 npr1 double mutants revealed that glutathione plays an important part in linking intracellular oxidative stress to induced JA signaling, and that this effect of glutathione is not explainable in terms of altered NPR1 function. Overall, the study indicates new glutathione‐dependent points of control in defense hormone signaling.
