Abstract

Ecological Race: a didactic game for teaching Ecology
The teaching of Science and Biology faces historical challenges related to student engagement and understanding, especially when dealing with abstract content that feels disconnected from everyday life. In this context, this study presents the educational game “Ecological Race”, created by Biological Sciences students at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, as a playful tool for teaching Ecology in lower and upper secondary education. The game aims to facilitate the learning of ecological concepts through the simulation of natural processes, encouraging decision-making, problem-solving, and teamwork. It was tested with teacher-training undergraduates, who evaluated the clarity of the rules, content coherence, and level of engagement, based on dynamics involving habitat fragmentation, predation, environmental events, and ecological connectivity. The results indicated the need for design adjustments, such as the creation of a fixed map, gradual introduction of ecological corridors, and expansion of random events, which enhanced immersion and active learning. A prior theoretical class also proved beneficial for understanding the proposed activity. It is concluded that the game has high pedagogical potential, contributing to the development of cognitive and socio-emotional skills while strengthening the connection between theory and teaching practice.
