Abstract

The media landscape in Senegal has witnessed remarkable diversification in terms of the number of media outlets, whether print, audio, or visual, as well as improvements in technological infrastructure and communication networks. This has led to the widespread adoption of digital media and social media – the “new media” – in the country.

The history of media in Senegal is intertwined with the political events the country has experienced, from the colonial period to independence. Thanks to the political stability the country has enjoyed, the media sector has not faced widespread restrictions, despite some challenges and various limitations. These have not resulted in the collapse or complete curtailment of press freedom, to the point that Senegal is described as a “democratic model” for West Africa. Perhaps what best illustrates this is the media coverage of the last presidential elections in early 2024, which saw opposition candidate Bassirou Diomêne Faye win, becoming the youngest elected president in Africa.

Despite the diverse media landscape in Senegal and the opportunities that could have arisen from this variety of content and platforms, restrictions on media freedom and the challenges facing the sector in the country have limited the media's influence on political life and civic engagement. This is compounded by limitations on access to information and the existence of legislation and regulations that hinder journalists' ability to work and obtain the data they need to perform their professional duties.
