Abstract
This study employed qualitative narrative inquiry to explore the motivations for learning Korean, the work experiences of Napali learners in South Korea, and the impact of these experiences on their lives and identities. Despite the growing number of Nepali migrant workers in South Korea, limited research has examined their Korean language learning experiences and the ways these experiences shape their work, lives, and identities. The participants studied Korean to pass the EPS-TOPIK examination and support their families. As they adapted to linguistic and cultural challenges, they experienced personal growth. Their dedication to their families strengthened their sense of accomplishment and expanded their self-awareness, shifting the perception of themselves from solely family members to active agents guiding their families’ futures. The findings provide foundational insights into the motivations and cultural characteristics of Nepali learners and highlight the need for practical, learner-centered Korean language education that reflects real-life and workplace contexts.
